Alone Again (Naturally)

Actually, Steve is sitting here, but as we were driving home tonight we heard that Gilbert O'Sullivan song, "Alone Again (Naturally)" and I just had to come home and look up the lyrics. What an absolute scream!

Any mirth or merriment I may have felt at reading about that heartache, though, was gone when I read that Jerry Orbach had died. I am a Law & Order junkie, and Lenny Briscoe is NYPD to me. The screen has lost a staple and the stage has lost a star.

And, of course, that's relatively insignificant compared to the 117,000 lost so far in the tsunamis and the earthquake.

Hug your babies tonight, whatever (or whoever) they may be.

Ms. DeRouen,
I was Google-searching the word "skein" along with the phrase "word origin" and that combination brought me to a year-old page of yours that happened to fit the search.
(My new toy is a Treo 650. It allows me to view and search the web as if I were on my home PC. My wife Florence and I use it to look up the answer to virtually anything that comes up in conversation. Flo is a marathon crochetier [awful word!], and when she mentioned "skein" we both wondered where it came from.)
I started to look through your journal and found that I couldn't stop reading.
Instead of boring you with a precis (one of your favorite words, I take it), I'll just say that you're a delightful writer. I hope a novel is in the works in addition to any scholarly work you might be considering.
One more note: You paint, both in words and photographs, a landscape filled with joyous friends and family. I'm sure others have told you that these are "the times of your life." Treasure them, as I do, mine, during nostalgic moments.
One short paragraph about me. I've been a newspaper writer and editor since graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1966. My most recent adventure was nearly 20 years at the Philadelphia (Pa.) Daily News -- a stretch that ended in retirement in 1997 following a quite unexpected heart transplant. Now you know how I can spend so much time Googling. Retirement is a kick if one has a great mate and a decent disability insurance policy.)
If you don't mind, I'll peek in every now and then to follow your progress.
Stay happy!
