Um, Yeah

Watched the Oscars last night. A thought or two:

--Am I missing something, or is it OK for me to be offended by a song that claims it's difficult to be an exploiter of women? And can I be REALLY concerned that this ditty was chosen by the Academy (which George Clooney claims is out of touch in a good, socially conscious kind of way) as the Best Song from a film this year? ETA: Here's an essay from WaPo about the song. Food for thought.

--What was Selma Hayek wearing? Her boobs looked like they had been shifted over to the right side of her body. Color was great, fabric was great--shaping seemed way off.

--Reese Witherspoon looked luminous. Charlize Theron looked like she was heading to a prom. In 1984.

--Loved the stuffed penguins. Confused as to why noone in the audience seemed to get it or find it remotely amusing if they did. Concerned that I may be a big nerd.

--Nerd status reinforced by the fact that I thought Jon Stewart was v. funny. The ads were classic. Especially the Judi Dench one.

I thought Stewart was funny, too -- and I loved the ads. He didn't seem as high energy as he sometimes is, which was a shame, but I think that's because he was being respectful, which is less entertaining but probably appropriate.

I didn't hear much of the winning song, nor have I seen the movie or heard the song before (yes, I'm very out of touch with the world!) so I'm reserving judgement. Of course it's nice to see some variety in the song nominees (could they have been *more* different?) but I can understand your concern.

I'm with you on the music bit. Not that I could understand 95% of what the lyrics were, and I don't think I want to know. I have a feeling the Academy voted for it so they could look "hip."

Stewart was pretty darn good, and I like that he let other (Will Farrell, for one) do their own bits instead of trying to carrying it all himself. The ads were very good.

Completely avoided the whole she-bang.

I will say this - I was pleased about the results of Best Picture. I loved Crash and definitely felt that I was a lone voice in the wilderness crying out about that film. No one saw it!

The reason I avoided the Oscars? The politics. Unfortunately, if my usual news sources have anything to say about it, the politics are going to be in my face anyway.

I have no opinion on the other (do I even need to mention the name?) film that was buzzed-to-death as a probably winner, except to say that I was bugged-to-death with the buzz, and haven't seen it yet for that very reason. I really despise feeling manipulated by the film critics and actors that are wanna-be political pundits. I get enough preachin' at church, thanks.

...and she leaps off of her rickety soap box...

Oops, sorry... she-bang kinda looks bad.

I meant crapshoot.
or... umm...

Shindig. There we go.
