Xmas Goodies and Knitting

Yesterday we opened gifts (very late) and my dear brother-in-law hooked me up, so to speak: Vogue Knitting AND Felted Knits. I'm thrilled to have these great books and can't wait to try all the different techniques in both! I want to make the felted ballet slippers...must...wait...till

I finish all my other knitting. I finished a baby hat (way too big for a baby, I'm afraid) and just need to do the tucking in on my clogs. I'm working on a dishtowel (looks way too huge) and a hat. I WANT to be working on Lizz B's wee socks. Hmmm...

I think I'm going to make a headband for my mom. And Knitty's Coronet with the rest of the Lamb's Pride in Blueblood Red for Kelly.

Today's Knitting

I committed to making hats for Steve's granddaughters. I made the first hat a month ago using Bernat Cottontots in Very Berry. Cute hat--still needs a pompom. The second hat will be in Cottontots Strawberry with a big stripe in Wonder White. I say "will be" because the hat is but a mere 5 or 6 rows into its completion. So I guess the girls will have to wait until after Xmas for their caps.

Gave Steve his socks last night. He put them on and they fit...sort of. One sock was a wee bit bigger than the other, due to a gusset shaping problem I encountered. Lesson learned: always make good notes about sock number 1 so that sock number 2 will be the same.

Plugging away

I started a hat with lion wool-ease in autumn print (leftovers from Steve's scarf) and decided to us the hemmed edge instructions in The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns. Love the book, but this 3" of stockinette BEFORE I get to the turning row seems a bit excessive. I'm going to muddle on through and keep working on it--knit, knit, knit, knit ad nauseum--but if it ends up looking freakish and being too hot on the forehead, I'll never to that again.

What I really want to be working on is the pair of socks I'm planning. Must resist...

Some Knitting Content

So I've finished:

  • Steve's scarf & a pair of socks for him (shhh! don't tell)
  • a seed stitch scarf for (gasp) me in Lion Homespun Pagoda. Matching hat to follow.
  • The parts of baby Gwen's Haiku sweater (just have to find some buttons and sew it together)
I feel fairly good. I want to make some socks!

Stash Busting Part II

So I started going through the stash last night. Catalogued the cedar trunk and a lot of the loose yarn that was around it (and is not IN the cedar trunk). Lots of little projects (hats, scarves, socks, dishcloths), two wool lace shawls, one stole, a sweater set, and baby items are definitely in the mix here, as well as at least 3 felted bags, all in various shades of brown/rust/cream. Definite giveaways! :-)

There's still a bit of yarn to catalogue, but I'm feeling pretty accomplished--and terrified! I think I'll have to go on a pattern diet so that I'm not tempted by all these new projects. And I'll have to stop looking at Elann, especially when they tempt me with stuff like Peruvian Baby Cashmere (which I got four balls of for a pair of sinfully indulgent socks). I'm already dreaming of a shawl pour moi in the Baby Silk.

Oh dear. I'll have to make it work somehow.

Stash Busting

Beginning January 1, 2004, I will not purchase another bit of yarn until 75% of my stash has been knitted.

This means that in the next 2 weeks, I need a good catalogue of the yarn in my stash and a list of potential projects for every bit. The fewer socks, the better! I know I've got a sweater set or two worth of wool in there, lots of dishtowels, some scarves, hats, mittens...and socks. A couple of lace shawls. Baby gear. Catnip mice.

It's all got to get knitted.

The After Thanksgiving Bounty

Boy, did I get some stuff this weekend! Don't hate me because I'm a yarn freak!

  • Clover Size 13 Circs
  • Clover Size 10.5 DPNs
  • 3 skeins Lion Homespun in Colonial (to make a prayer shawl)
  • Materials for a fuzzy bag (gift)
  • 2 skeins Lamb's Pride Worsted in Deep Charcoal (for S's GA Tech clogs)
  • 2 balls of Regia in this wacky colorway called "Las Vegas" for a friend who's going through a rough time.

I love sales! ;-)

In other news, I'm still knitting away on the sleeve for baby Gwen's Haiku sweater. Will post pics as soon as it's done.
